It is indicated for: treatment of type I diabetes; treatment of type II diabetes that has not been adequately controlled with diet, exercise and oral hypoglycemic agents; initial stabilizationof diabetic patients with ketoacidosis, nonketotic hyperosmolar syndrome, and during periods ofstress such as severe infections or major surgery in diabetic patients; treatment ofgestational diabetes. Intermediate-acting insulin (such as NPH/Isophane insulin) begins to act in1 to 3 hours and lasts 12 to 16 hours.

Isophane insulin is an intermediate-acting insulin that increases insulin levels in the body, which helps to lower blood sugar levels. It's a cloudy suspension that contains insulin and protamine, which is what gives it a longer duration of action
